Chapter 7: The Broken Edge

The bowl burst across the floorboards.

Everyone jumped except me.

Bianca dropped to one knee and snatched up the biggest piece, a curved shard with a white edge.

I knew that edge.

She turned and came at me with it, her face wet again, her mouth already shaping the words.

"I can't control it. Josie, I'm sorry, I can't control it."

I stood where I was.

In my last life I had thrown my hands up and it had not helped.

This time I did not need to.

Caleb stepped in front of me and caught her wrist in one hand.

He did it calmly, with no hurry at all.

"Let go," he said.

"Get off me!"

She wrenched and twisted and put her whole weight against him.

The shard slipped sideways in her grip and dragged across her own palm.

She screamed.

Blood welled up fast and ran down to her wrist.

The scream was real this time, thin and shocked.

Everyone started shouting at once.

"She's bleeding!"

"Caleb, look what you did!"

"I did not do that," Caleb said. He let go of her wrist and held up both his empty hands. "I have it recorded."

Mom was already hugging Bianca's bleeding hand to her own nightgown.

"Dennis, the car. Now."

Dad ran for the keys.

"We're going to the hospital," Mom said. "Josie, you're coming. You owe her an apology."

"For what?"

"For all of it! For being so cold, for the video, for setting this up."

"Setting what up?" said my uncle. "She did this with her own hands."

"Stay out of it."

"Carol," Aunt Gwen said sharply.

"Josie comes with us!" Mom screamed.
