Chapter 8: Rainier Rules

We got back to the lodge at dawn.

A silver car I did not know sat in the drive, parked neatly across the front steps.

Caleb stood on the porch beside a woman in a gray coat.

She was small and straight-backed, with Caleb's grey eyes and short silver hair.

She was watching our car come up the drive.

"That's my mother," Caleb said, coming down the steps to meet me.

I had not known she was coming.

"You didn't say."

"I called her last night," he said. "After the video."

He took my hand.

Mom got out of the car before it had fully stopped, with Bianca still tucked under her arm.

She marched up the steps in her wrinkled nightgown and stopped in front of the gray coat.

"You're Caleb's mother? Good. I'm glad you're here."

"I'm sure you are," said Caleb's mother.

"Your son hurt my daughter."

Dad winced behind her.

"He pushed her," Mom said. "She's been through a terrible night. She has a condition, and your son frightened her. He's autistic, and he doesn't understand."

The woman in the gray coat did not move.

"Say that again," she said.

"He is autistic," Mom said. "People like him lash out. It's a known problem. Josie should never have brought him around Bianca."

The porch went very quiet.

I saw Caleb's hand twitch in mine.

His mother turned her head and looked at him for one second.

Then she looked back at my mother.

"I raised him for twenty-nine years," she said. "He has never lashed out at anyone. He has been lied about, though. Many times."
