Chapter 8: The Package

I looked at the paper in his hand.

Then I looked past him at the front hall table, where the residence mail always went.

"Where's my package?"

Quentin frowned. "What package?"

"Gage texted me last night. He said my birthday box would be here this morning. A brown box with North Carolina stamps. Where is it?"

On the sofa, Tinsley pulled the throw up to her chin.

"Oh," she said. "That."

Something cold went down my back.

"That cheap thing?" She sniffed and wiped her eyes. "It came up while you were resting. It was all taped up with duct tape. I looked inside, and it was just old junk, and I was upset about the brunch, so I threw it down the chute."

She said it.

I crossed the room.

She saw my face and started to sit up.

I slapped her.

The sound cracked off the windows.

Her head turned with it. The throw slid onto the floor.

For one second nobody breathed.

Then Tinsley put her hand to her cheek and stared at me, and for the first time in three years, she wasn't crying.

She was furious.

"Winnie!" Quentin's voice came out of him in a roar.

I picked my bag up off the glass table, right out from under his hand.

He was so shocked, he let it go.

My phone was in the side pocket. My license was in my wallet.

"When does the trash go out?" I asked him.

He just looked at me.

"When does the truck come, Quentin? You own the building."

"Four," he said, like it had been pulled out of him.

It was three thirty-eight.

I walked out the double doors.

Simon's woman in the dark suit straightened up.

"Loading dock," I said. "Fast."
