Chapter 24: Hello
The arrivals exit at Logan Airport was hot and smelled of asphalt, and this time the pack I belonged to was waiting inside it.
Arlo's hand was warm in mine.
He wore no patch.
The scent of moss after rain came off him freely now, and every wolf in the terminal lifted its head as we passed and lowered it again.
His grey flannel blanket hung out of his backpack, and he sneezed in the heat.
"Mom, it's hot."
"I know, baby."
Torin walked on my other side, in a black coat over a white shirt open at the throat.
He had the Alpha's ring on his hand and nothing at all in his pockets.
Above the exit, the cedar crest hung where it always had.
A crew in orange vests stood on the pavement beside two tall ladders.
"They're taking it down?" Arlo asked.
"In a minute," Torin said. "I wanted you to see it first."
"Why?"
"Because it says every wolf who walks under it is told this pack's law starts here." He looked up at the carving. "And the law that started here put your mom on a plane. I'd like the next thing over that door to be something I'm not ashamed of."
Arlo thought about it.
"What's going up instead?"
"I haven't decided. I thought you might have an idea."
"A boat," said Arlo.
"We'll see," said his father, with a straight face.
They were waiting for us under the crest.
Talbot stood on the left in his dark blue suit, and Rowan stood on the right in a white T-shirt and jeans.
