Chapter 16: His Name Is Not on It
Glenda's POV
Luke's call came while I was pouring Teddy's cereal at Bernice's counter.
He told me about the printout, and about the administrator's phone at eleven the night before.
I put the milk down very carefully.
"Stay with Teddy," I told Bernice. "Walk him to the bus."
"Where are you going?"
"Home."
"I'll drive you."
"Bernice."
"I'll drive you," she said, "and Teddy can ride the bus alone for once in his life."
Alan's truck was parked in the yard with its door open.
He was standing in my kitchen in his socks, making coffee, with his duffel bag by the table.
He had shaved.
He looked up when I came through the back door, and his face did something hopeful that I had to look away from.
"Glenda. I thought we'd talk."
"You called the administrator."
The coffee scoop stopped.
"I was trying to keep her from losing everything."
"You were trying to keep yourself out of a room with all of us in it."
"That isn't fair."
"Alan, you offered to pay her legal bills in the middle of the night, behind my back."
"She is the woman who sent me to the hospital with seven stitches."
"She's my child."
"So is Teddy," I said. "He lay on a bed for forty-two minutes, and you were in a truck stop with your phone off."
He put the scoop down.
I walked to the cabinet and took down his coffee mug.
It was the one with the chipped handle, older than Luke.
I set it by the sink.
"This house was my grandmother's," I said. "It's in my name. It's been in my name since the day she died, and your name has never been on a line of it."
