Chapter 6: Toast
"I don't know what the Macon depot has to do with us," I said.
It was true, and it sounded like a lie even to me.
Luke waited.
I took out my phone, opened the text from the unknown number, and put it in his hand.
Ask Alan about the Macon depot.
He read it twice.
"When did this come?"
"Yesterday, an hour after the antivenom."
"And what did Dad say?"
"He said it was a woman from a depot, a long time ago." I kept my voice level. "Then he told me to delete it and leave your girlfriend alone."
Luke sat down on the edge of Teddy's bed.
Teddy was asleep again, the rabbit tucked under his chin.
"She went through my phone," Luke said slowly. "Back in the winter. I thought it was a joke. She said she wanted to see my photos."
"And she found the money."
"She found everything. Your name, the address, the school." He pressed the heel of his hand against his eye. "She asked me so many questions about the house, Mom. What the porch looked like. Whether Dad drove the truck himself. I thought she was being sweet."
I looked at the top of my son's head.
He had the same cowlick he'd had at four years old.
"Go home and sleep," I said. "Teddy is leaving at noon."
"I'm on until six."
"Luke."
"I'll come tonight."
The discharge papers took until one.
The doctor said Teddy would have a sore hand for a week and a scar the size of a grain of rice.
He said we had been lucky, and he looked at the stitches over my eye when he said it.
