Chapter 13: Everything Changed
Karl got the key into the lock on the third try.
We had not said a word since the bluff.
Twenty minutes in his father's truck with the heater off, and neither of us had said the word baby.
The door swung in on the dark hall.
I shoved him over the threshold and kicked it shut behind us with my heel.
The flat smelled of fryer oil and of the cedar chest at the end of the hall.
"Wrobel," he started.
"Don't talk," I said.
"I only-"
"Don't say sorry, and don't say anything about my mother."
I took him by the lapels of his good coat and walked him backward until his shoulders hit the front door.
"Our mother is pregnant," I said.
"I heard," he said.
"Your father is fifty-three. She is forty-four. They're painting a room."
"I know what they're doing, Wrobel," he said.
"And you had your hand on my knee," I said.
"I know where my hand was."
I laughed, and it came out high and cracked.
I kissed him to cover the sound.
He kissed me back with his whole mouth, hungry and angry, and his coat hit the floor.
Mine followed it.
"Say something that isn't about them," I said against his jaw.
"You're wearing the green dress."
"Better."
"I wanted it off you the whole drive," he said. "I wanted it off you at the table, with her hand on her stomach."
"Then take it off."
His hands found the zipper at my back and dragged it down in one pull.
The wool slid off my shoulders and caught at my elbows.
He put his mouth on the swell of my breast above the bra and sucked, hard, until I felt the mark rise.
I gasped and shoved both hands into his hair.
"Again," I said. "Where only I can see it."
He did it again, lower, and I felt his teeth.
I unbuckled his belt with fingers that were still shaking.
He caught my wrists and turned me by them, fast, so that my face was against the cold wood of the door.
"Hands up," he said.
I put them up.
He laid his palms over the backs of my hands and pinned them flat above my head.
