Chapter 8: The Shower
Matti's POV
I woke at five in her bed, and I hadn't meant to.
I'd left at midnight, and I'd sat in my truck at her curb with the engine off until she came out in a T-shirt and bare feet and knocked on the glass.
She hadn't said anything, so I came in.
Now she was asleep against my shoulder with her braid across my chest and her mouth open a little, and she snored.
It was a small, rough snore, and I'd have bet money she didn't know she did it.
I lay there and listened to it in the dark.
I hadn't heard her voice in five years, and now I knew what she sounded like asleep.
She had said her piece to me in the garage on Thursday, and every word of it was true.
She'd taught me to skate and checked my math and given me her bacon.
She hadn't heard what I'd say if she asked, because she hadn't asked me one thing that night in the driveway.
I wasn't going to say it now.
If I told her who really did it, she'd call me a liar to my face, and she'd be right to, because she had no reason on earth to believe me.
She'd hear it from the person who did it, or she'd never hear it.
I wouldn't say that name in this bed.
There was one other thing I hadn't told her, either.
It was in an envelope in the glove box of my truck, folded in thirds.
It wasn't about her apology, and it wasn't about the party, and I'd decided it could stay in the glove box until I knew what she'd do with it.
