Chapter 15: Terms
My mother opened the motel window as far as it went, which was about six inches.
"Did you know what was in my house when you married me?"
Her voice carried across the lot.
A trucker smoking by the ice machine turned to look.
Augustin didn't care about the trucker.
"I saw one on your shoulder at the farmers' market," he said. "A small one. That's why I spoke to you first."
Mom's hand went tight on the curtain.
I held my breath.
"It's why I spoke to you," he said. "It isn't why I came back the next Saturday. Or the one after that."
"Why did you?"
"You told the tomato man his tomatoes looked like they'd been through a divorce. I laughed for the first time in six years."
The trucker laughed too.
Mom shot him a look, and he went back inside.
"What are you?"
"A demon. A broker of contracts, for most of four hundred years. I bought people's souls on paper. I was good at it, and I'm not proud of it, and I stopped."
"Why did you stop?"
"Because my wife died paying for one of my kind's bargains, and I was too slow to save her."
"Is Ivo dangerous?"
"Only to things that hurt your daughter."
"Are you?"
"Only to Zane Huxley."
"Did you ever lie to me?"
He didn't look away.
"Every day. By not telling you this."
"Anything else?"
"Once I told you the yellow dress was too much. I love the yellow dress."
A sound came out of my mother that wasn't quite a laugh.
She went on for an hour.
Did the money come from souls.
Some, a long time ago, and he'd given most of that away.
Was his first wife really English.
Yes, from Kent.
Had he ever wanted to tell her.
Every single night, in the dark, and every morning he'd lost his nerve over the espresso.
