Chapter 23: Client List

"Then I'll buy it back," I said.

"With what?"

"I don't know yet. Give me a minute."

The man from facilities was still on the line, humming.

"Miss Beale? Are you there? You should really try one of his journals. It changes everything."

I hung up on him.

My keys to every mechanical room in that arena had just turned into a thank-you page.

I sat in the reading nook with the phone in my lap and a cushion print on my face.

Ivo put his chin on my shoulder.

"You're doing the thing," he said.

"What thing?"

"Where you stare at a wall until it gives you a door."

"Is it working?"

"You tell me. I can't lie, but I can't read minds either."

I thought about the facilities man, dreamy and gone.

I thought about the first client, sitting on her stairs, breathing like she was at the beach.

Clear the pest, and the love goes with it.

"He bought the staff," I said slowly. "He can't buy back the people I already cleaned."

Ivo lifted his head.

"How many is that?"

I opened my invoices.

Forty-one houses since July.
