Chapter 7: Feel It

"Beckett. Stop."

He stopped, his shirt open to the middle of his chest.

"You've lost your mind," I said.

"Probably." He didn't button it back up. "You have nineteen studies left and seven hours. Do you want help or not?"

"From you?"

"From the only grown man on this floor."

I should have said no.

I should have pointed at the door and waited until he went through it.

I looked at the thirty-one mummies on my floor and thought about my dad asleep downstairs with the scholarship letter in his wallet.

"Fine," I said. "Sit there. Don't talk."

He took the shirt off and dropped it on my desk chair.

Then he sat on the edge of the bed, half turned toward me, and pulled his glasses out of his pocket and put them on.

"So I can see your work," he said.

He was built long and lean, not gym big.

Paint had dried in a pale streak along his ribs. There was a line of dark hair down his stomach that disappeared under the waistband of his sweatpants.

I drew him.

Fast, bad, stiff.

He leaned over and looked.

"Still a mummy."

"You said you wouldn't talk."

"I said nothing. You said that." He held out his hand, palm up. "Feel it. You need to know how a body works. Especially a grown man's."

"I know how a body works."

"You know how one looks from across a room."

His hand stayed there, open, waiting.
