Chapter 15: What I Told My Father
Reed's POV
My father's study has one lamp, one leather chair, and a rule that nobody sits in the chair.
I stood on the carpet with my folder under my arm.
It was a quarter past eleven, and the house was quiet.
Melody was in her room with her phone in my father's desk drawer.
Colleen had taken Lucy upstairs at six and had not come down.
"Say it," my father said.
He sat behind the desk with his hands folded, and he looked fifty-eight, which he had not looked at breakfast.
"I wrote the silence order," I said. "I did it on Sunday night, after Melody's call in the guest hallway. I put it on a laminated card."
"Why a card?"
"So nobody would argue with it."
"Did they?"
"Four hundred people, and nobody asked for a footnote."
He almost smiled and stopped himself.
"Go on."
So I told him the rest, in order, and he did not interrupt once.
When I got to the part where I couldn't warn Lucy, he lifted one hand.
"Because she would have walked straight to Melody's door," my father said.
"And asked her to her face."
"She would have been right to."
"And Melody would have sent it that night."
He was quiet.
I put the folder on the desk, and I said the part I had practiced in the car.
"I'm not asking you to forgive me. I made four hundred people block an eighteen-year-old girl, and I took her phone, and I made her think it was me against her. It was wrong. I'd do it again in the same order."
