Chapter 8: The Print Room

Reed caught my wrist at the bottom of the stairs, and he did not say rule anything.

He pulled me down the corridor at a fast walk, and I let him.

He stopped at a gray metal door marked PRINT ROOM and found a key in his pocket.

"This is rule six," I said. "You're taking me off the schedule."

He pushed me through the door and locked it behind us.

The room smelled of warm paper and toner.

A copier the size of a car hummed in the corner, and the only light came from a green strip over a long table.

Reed pulled out his phone and typed with both thumbs, fast.

"What are you doing?"

He turned the screen to me.

It was the camp group chat, and he was the admin.

He had just deleted a photo of two people in a stairwell, and a message under it that said, Wow, family bonding!

Underneath, forty-one people had already seen it.

Forty-one people who had all blocked me, and who were all now very curious.

"You can delete that?" I said.

Reed set the phone face down on the table.

Then he looked at me, and his eyes were nothing like the eyes he used in the cafeteria.

"Say it," I said. "Anything."

He picked me up by the waist and set me on the copier.

The glass was warm through my jeans.

I grabbed his tie, which was a gray one, and pulled him between my knees.

"Rule nine?" I said.

"Rule nine," Reed said, and his mouth came down on my neck.

I had been kissed before.
