Chapter 10: Then Go
I got up off the floor.
I walked to the door and put the phone in her hand.
"Zero three one four," I said. "You should change it."
"Why would I?" She dropped it into her blouse pocket. "You're my whole life, baby."
She looked past me at Roarke on the carpet, at the rumpled bed, at the floor plan with my backward signature on it.
She didn't ask a single question.
That was how I knew she'd seen enough.
"Get some sleep," she said. "Both of you."
She pulled the door shut.
The lock beeped and clicked.
I stood there with my hand flat on the wood.
"She can open every door in this house," I said.
"I know."
"I'm not sleeping in that guest room."
"I know." Roarke got up and pulled the comforter back on his side of the bed. Then he picked up a pillow and took it to the armchair by the window. "Bed's yours. I've slept in worse chairs."
"Roarke."
"Not under my father's roof," he said, without looking at me. "Not with her listening through the wall. Not like this."
I lay down in my clothes.
He folded himself into the armchair with his feet on the rowing machine.
I listened to him breathe for a long time.
Some time after three, I fell asleep.
Sunday dinner at the Gibbons house was at six, in the dining room with the long windows.
Pot roast. A white tablecloth. Myles at the head.
Lonnie was there, in a pink shirt, telling the housekeeper her gravy was the best he'd had since his grandmother's.
My mother wore pearls.
