Chapter 28: Keep Time
"Her own mother has covered for her in nine towns," Lonnie said into the podium mic. "Tulsa. Wichita. She took a dead woman's watch off this young man's dresser the first night she was in the house."
A murmur went through the tables.
The purse woman put her hand on her purse.
I opened my mouth.
Somebody else got there first.
"No, she didn't."
Roarke hadn't taken a microphone.
He didn't need one. His voice was the one he used on job sites, and it carried to the windows.
"I'm the one who called her a thief," he said. "On my father's lawn, in June, in front of forty of you. I was wrong, and I said so on that same lawn a week later." He looked straight up at the stage. "She didn't take my watch. Her mother did. Hollyn found it in her mother's makeup case and gave it back to me cleaned. It ran four seconds slow, and she fixed that too."
He held up his left wrist.
The Carrera caught the light.
"So whatever he says next," Roarke said, "remember who's said it before, and who was wrong."
