Chapter 29: Accounting
I looked at my mother's hands, held out in front of her.
No ring now. The detective had taken the diamond band at the table and put it in a little envelope.
"I don't know," I said.
She nodded.
"Ask me in a month," I said.
"I'll ask you in a month."
Then the detective touched her elbow, and she went down the long aisle after Lonnie, in her blue silk, without looking back once.
The band started playing again, because nobody had told it not to.
Nobody danced.
Myles sat down hard at the edge of the stage with his father's fountain pen still in his hand.
Roarke sat down beside him.
After a minute I sat down on Myles's other side, in my black kitchen clothes, with the green book in my lap.
The three of us sat in a row on the edge of the stage and watched three hundred people pretend to eat dessert.
"Well," Myles said finally. "Nobody ate the chicken."
Roarke laughed so hard he had to put his head down on his knees.
The money came back the way water comes out of a basement.
