Chapter 14: The Badge

Laurent's POV

At nine the next morning she walked under my cameras with one card in her fingers.

Camera eleven picked her up at the employee door, in her black vest with no badge on it.

She was turning the card over and over as she walked, the way I turn a deck when I'm thinking.

I zoomed in until I could read it.

It was the ace of spades, with a blue back.

My lip was split where Andre had hit me, and it opened again when I smiled at the screen.

She was going up to the general manager's office for her suspension review.

I knew who was waiting for her up there, because I'd seen the visitor log at seven.

The state gaming agent had driven down from Jackson to sit in.

A dealer with cash from a host in her name was the agent's business, not just ours.

I watched Aimee step into the elevator alone and put the card in her vest pocket.

Then I took my jacket off the back of my chair and went up after her.

The general manager's office has a window on the Gulf and a desk the size of a crap table.
