Chapter 16: The Numbers

Solveig's POV

I was out of my truck before I had shut the door.

"You drove forty miles," I said, "to the company that wants to bulldoze my father's grave."

"It's your brother's grave," Nels said.

"Don't you dare correct me."

"Sol," Nels said.

"I followed you from the farm. You told me you were going to Hilda's for hay."

"I did say that," Nels said.

"You lied to my face, with a bandage on your hand."

A man in a company vest was watching us through the glass door.

Nels took my elbow and steered me around the side of the building, to a gap between a dumpster and a wall where nobody could see.

I yanked my arm free.

"You don't get to decide what I'm told," I said. "All my life I've been told what I'm allowed to know, by Delores, by the lawyer, by you. This is my farm."

"It's your farm."

"Then why am I standing behind a dumpster, finding out in a parking lot what's happening to it?"

He stood there and took it.

He did not argue, and he did not leave.

He looked at the ground for a while, and then he looked at me.

"I should have told you," he said.

"Yes."

"I was afraid you'd say no."

"To what?" I said.

"To anything I thought of," Nels said.

"You think I'd say no to a way out?"
