Chapter 10: A Bed
I turned the lamp on myself.
It was the big lamp on his dresser, with the green glass shade, and it threw a warm yellow circle across the bed and the floor and his bare feet.
The door was shut behind us.
He stood just inside it with his back against the wood and his hands open at his sides.
"Lights on," I said.
"Lights on," said Marcello.
"You said you wanted to see my face," I said.
"I said a lot of things," he said.
"You said them in front of fourteen men, Marcello, and I want every one of them back."
His mouth twitched.
I crossed the room and put my hands on his chest and felt his heart under the shirt.
"I'm going to undress you first," I said. "Slowly. And you're going to stand there."
"Is that an order?" he said.
"It's a rule."
"Then I'll follow it."
I undid his buttons from the top.
I took my time over every one.
With each button I kissed the skin I uncovered, the hollow of his throat, the center of his chest, the warm flat plane over his ribs.
He breathed in short bursts through his nose.
When I pushed the shirt from his shoulders, I stopped and looked at him in the lamplight.
The ice house had been gray and cold and rushed.
Now I could see all of him, the broad shoulders and the long old scar along his ribs, and the dark hair running down his stomach.
The muscles of his arms stood out, because he was gripping his own wrists behind his back.
"You're holding on," I said.
"You said stand there," he said.
"I did."
"I'm doing it."
"You're doing it very well," I said.
