The long table was full when we got there.

Every captain in the Bellanca house sat along it with his hat on his knee.

At the head, in her own cushioned chair, Agata sat with her hands folded.

The housekeeper stood by the sideboard.

The driver guarded the door.

Nobody said a word as I walked in behind Marcello with my hair still tangled from the truck.

"Sit," said Agata.

I sat at her right.

Marcello did not sit.

He stood behind my chair with one hand on its back, and I felt the warmth of it through the wood.

"Zia," he said. "What is this?"

"A mistake corrected." She did not look at him. "Nineteen years late."

She had two things in front of her on the cloth.

One was a thin silver frame, face down.

The other was a small laminated badge with a faded blue ribbon, and I knew it before she turned it around.

"That's my mother's badge," I said.

"It's from your work bag. I took it this morning, with the housekeeper's help. I'm sorry for that." Her voice was dry and steady. "I am not sorry for the rest."
