Chapter 9: The Fitting

At nine on Monday morning, I put my phone on a detective's desk and pressed play.

Malcolm sat beside me.

He had not slept either.

The detective listened to the whole recording with her pen still.

When Shane said, "I held her hand and we went up to look at the stars," she wrote a single word on her pad.

When it ended she took off her glasses.

"I believe you," she said. "That isn't the problem."

"What is the problem?" Malcolm said.

"The girl's death was ruled an accident nine years ago. This is a man telling a story to a woman in his bedroom. His lawyer will say it was a cruel joke, and that you were trespassing." She looked at me. "How did you get in?"

"His mother gave me the key."

"Will she say so?"

I didn't answer.

"I can open a file," the detective said. "I'll call Phoebe's mother in Ohio. I'll pull the autopsy. That takes weeks."

"The wedding is Friday," I said.

"Then I'd stay well away from him until I call you."

She slid the bracelet into an evidence bag, and wrote my name on the seal.

"Don't confront him, Ms. Caldwell. Don't play this for anyone he can reach."

I nodded.

Outside on the steps, I said, "I'm going to the fitting."

"What fitting?"

"Brynn's dress. Dad sent me the time. Four o'clock, at the bridal shop on Newbury Street."

Malcolm turned me by the shoulders.

"You heard her."

"I heard her say don't play it for anyone he can reach. Brynn is the only person who can say what she saw." I met his eyes. "She was at that window. She wants to live. I think I can make her talk."
