Chapter 18: Banned

By seven in the morning Tang had forty-one missed calls.

His mother had called nine times from Shenzhen and his father six from Chongqing.

A sports journalist he had never met had called twice.

The message began with the words, "Just to give you a chance to comment."

Tang sat on the edge of the bed with the phone in both hands and read the post for the fourth time.

Rongda Truth had written it in a voice that sounded very sure.

It named him, and Fu's initials, and the corticosteroid, and it ended with a line in capitals: HOW MANY OF HIS MEDALS WERE CLEAN?

The shares had passed nine thousand.

"Don't read the comments," said Fu.

"I'm not."

"You've read them."

"I read some," said Tang.

Fu took the phone out of his hands and laid it on the bed.

He was dressed already and shaved, with the green notebook in his bag and his face composed.

Nothing in the way he moved told Tang what he had been doing in this bed five hours earlier.

Tang loved him for it, and also wanted to hit something.

At eight the federation sent an email to the team, copied to Coach.

It said, in two lines, that Tang Zhiyuan's provisional suspension would be extended to include the university's own facilities pending the hearing.
