Nils went down the stairs in his jeans and opened the door.
I came behind him, on the third step, with a sweater pulled over nothing and the keys in my fist.
Gunnar stood on the porch.
He had no coat.
The gray sedan was nowhere in the street.
He had walked up the hill from the harbor in the cold.
His silver hair was flat on one side.
Under his arm he carried the champagne bottle from the tug.
The ribbon was still tied around its neck.
"Nils," he said.
"Dad," Nils said.
"They took the yard."
"I know."
"Eighty men I fed for forty years." His voice shook. "They signed it over in a kitchen. With your share, I'm told."
"I signed it."
Gunnar looked at him.
For the first time in my life I saw his face with nothing arranged on it.
