The airport shut down at nine, a year to the week, and the same clerk was behind the same desk.
I knew her by the pen she kept in her hair.
We were flying to Astoria, Oregon, for Marit's birthday, with a wrapped box in my carry-on and two weeks of leave.
The snow came sideways against the glass.
Nils stood at my shoulder with the bags.
His hair was still wet from the shuttle.
I had looked at the pale scar through his eyebrow nearly every day for a year, and not once without wanting to touch it.
"One room left," the clerk said. "King bed."
She looked at us.
She did not remember.
I knew that she did not, and I wanted to tell her anyway.
"We'll take it," I said.
"Name?"
I looked at Nils.
He looked at me.
Neither of us moved for a second, and then we both started to laugh.
"Annika Rautio," I said.
"Nils Lahti," he said. "And we'd like to give you a phone number, an address, and a name for the emergency contact."
