Chapter 18: Grading Sheet
The chief stood in the middle of Sota's one-room apartment in Itabashi, holding a red pen, and graded the ironing board.
"Corners are square," he said. "Cover is taut. This is the work of a disciplined man."
"Thank you, Chief."
"Nine out of ten."
"What did I lose the point for?"
"You kept it up in the middle of the room."
"It's a one-room apartment."
"Then it is an excellent ironing board," said the chief, and put the pen down on it, and pulled Sota in by his tie.
It was ten at night, the night before the all-hands, and neither of them had mentioned the all-hands once since the stairwell.
They had gone to a convenience store, bought two rice balls, eaten them in silence on a bench, and walked here.
Now the chief was pushing him backwards across the room, kissing him with a dry, furious, careful mouth.
"Shirt," he said.
"You're in my apartment."
"Shirt, Ichinose."
Sota pulled it over his head.
It was one of his ironed ones.
The chief took it from him, looked at the collar, and hung it on the back of the chair.
"Eight out of ten," he said.
"That's a low mark."
"I am a hard marker."
He picked up the red pen again.
It had a cheap plastic cap and a soft felt tip, and he clicked it open with his thumb.
"Lie on the futon."
"Chief."
"On your back. Hands over your head."
Sota went down on the thin mattress and put his wrists on the pillow.
The chief knelt astride his thighs, in his glasses and his shirt and his tie, with the pen in his fist.
He looked down at Sota for a long time.
"Shoulders," he said.
The felt tip touched the left one.
It was cold, and wet, and drew a neat red tick on the skin, and Sota's stomach clenched.
