Chapter 5: Fire Drill

At three o'clock on Wednesday the siren went off, and Section Two evacuated in under four minutes.

Everyone except the floor warden and his deputy.

Chief Takamine wore a green armband that said WARDEN.

Sota wore a yellow one that said DEPUTY, and held a flashlight, a clipboard and a checklist he had laminated himself.

The lift doors closed on the last of the staff.

The floor went quiet except for the siren, which rattled the ceiling tiles.

"Item one," Sota read. "Confirm that the open-plan area is clear."

"It is clear."

"Item two. Confirm that the pantry is clear."

They walked to the pantry together. The chief looked inside, and Sota looked at the back of his neck.

"Clear, Chief."

"Item three."

"Meeting room 3. Open the door. Check under the table."

The chief opened the door.

Then he did a thing that was not on the checklist.

He took Sota by the front of his shirt, pulled him in, and shut the door behind them.

The blind came down with a snap.

Sota's back hit the glass. The siren shook it against his spine.

He had his thumb on the stopwatch before he knew he was doing it.

"Chief, the checklist says under the table."

"Look under the table, then."

"Yes, Chief."

Sota's heart was going so hard that he felt it in his teeth.

He dropped to his knees on the carpet, and set down the clipboard, and looked up.

The chief stood over him with his hands at his sides and his face perfectly empty.

Sota unbuckled his belt.

Slowly.

The chief's jaw moved, once.

Sota undid the button, pulled down the zip, and found the man already thick and hard against the dark cotton of his briefs.
