Chapter 16: Denver
"Special how?" Toni asked him.
"You'll have to watch on Sunday," Moberly said.
"Sunday's a holiday for the hospice if they lose to Denver."
"Then I hope they win, Toni. I really do."
On Saturday the arena in Long Beach was full again, and half of it was wearing brown and cream.
Somebody had made a banner of the widow's owl, ten feet wide, with HOSPICE crossed out under it.
Denver played fast.
Their flex was a skinny kid who ran with his knife out instead of his gun.
In Holdline you run faster holding a knife, but you can't shoot anybody with it.
He used the speed to get behind people.
For the first six rounds he came out of nowhere and shot one of ours in the back, and nobody could say where nowhere was.
I took the Canadian's ears, because the Canadian was the one he kept killing.
Then I closed my eyes and listened to Denver's boots until I could sort them.
Four sets were heavy and normal, the sound of people carrying rifles.
The fifth was lighter and quicker.
It was the knife run.
