Chapter 18: The Old Coach
A reporter in the front row got to me first.
"Joel, did Toni Kasten give you Crown's plays?"
"No," I said.
"Then how did you call them?"
"I heard them."
A few people laughed.
Moberly stood up from the table and buttoned his jacket again.
"Save it for the hearing, Joel," he said, and walked out through the blue curtain.
At six the next morning I was in the parking lot of Crown's building in El Segundo.
I'd parked in that lot for twelve years.
My old coach's truck came in at six-twenty, the way it always had.
He got out with a coffee and a fresh piece of nicotine gum, and he saw me and stopped.
"Kid," he said.
"You were in the practice room when Toni shot the history piece."
"I was."
"Were Crown's plays on the whiteboard behind her?"
He chewed for a while.
"Glenn says there was a board in the shot," he said. "So there was a board."
"That's not what I asked."
