The locker room went quiet, except for the night manager, who was asleep on a bench with a pancake in his hand.
Trey stood in the doorway and didn't come in.
"Was it the knife?" he asked me.
"It was the knife."
"How long have I been doing that?"
"Since you were a sub. Every time you were the last one alive and scared."
He looked down at the jersey in his hands.
"Why didn't you ever tell me?"
I'd known he would ask, and I'd known the answer for about a week.
"Because nobody ever told me anything," I said. "I thought that was how it worked. It isn't."
He nodded slowly.
"Stop spinning it," I said. "That's the whole lesson."
Toni had come down from the desk and was standing behind him in the hallway with her headset around her neck.
Trey turned and saw her.
He looked at her right hand, and then he held out the jersey with the 7 on top.
"He'll take it off me Monday in a press release," he said. "I'd rather give it to somebody."
Toni took it.
She held it for a long moment, and then she folded it over her arm.
