Chapter 28: Courtroom
I read the filing on Jeb's porch in his fire company T-shirt, with the sun coming up over the hollow.
Bentley's lawyer had written thirty pages.
The heart of it was one sentence on page two.
The so-called trust was a handwritten note composed at a kitchen table by an elderly man with no legal training.
Jeb read it over my shoulder.
"He means the table."
"He means your granddad."
"Granddad's going to love this," Jeb said. "He's been waiting sixty years for somebody to call him elderly in writing."

The hearing was eleven days later, in a courtroom in Lexington with oak paneling Jeb said was veneer.
The whole Hollow came.
They filled the gallery in church clothes, with pimento cheese sandwiches in wax paper.
Granny came on her cane, without the oxygen cart. The doctor had said she could.
A man from the Lexington paper sat in the front row.
A woman from a Chicago business site sat beside him. She'd been at Freight Demo Day.
So had the clip of Breanne at Bentley's microphone. Somebody had posted it that night, and half a million people had watched it since.
