Chapter 32: The List
Granny turned eighty-one on the first warm Saturday in March.
She said she didn't want a party.
The whole Hollow came anyway, and she'd baked four pies for it herself, so nobody believed her.
They set up in her yard.
The elder's walnut table came up the hollow in three pieces one more time.
Jeb pegged it back together on the grass under the redbud.
Granny sat at the middle of it in her good cardigan, without her cane, and bossed everybody.
"That ham's crooked."
"It's a ham, Granny."
"Then it's a crooked ham."
Sheree had driven down from Chicago with a cake from a bakery on Taylor Street.
She'd lost both hubcaps again. She'd stopped replacing them.
"These roads owe me money," she told the elder.
"So does everybody," he said.
They'd become friends. Nobody understood it, and nobody asked.

At two o'clock, Jeb stood up at the end of the table with the fund binder and a fountain pen.
