Chapter 7: The Porch

Lark wasn't happy about it.

"The order says five hundred feet," she said at her door on Thursday afternoon, strapping on her duty belt. "If you walk up to that porch, I have to arrest you."

"Then you'll have to catch me."

"I'm on patrol from four to midnight. I'll drive by at six." She jabbed a finger at my chest. "Stay on the porch. Record everything. Don't touch anyone."

"Yes, officer."

"Don't do that either."

At ten to six I walked up Alder Street in the dark with my phone in my breast pocket and the recorder running.

Every window in the house at number fourteen was lit.

Through the front glass I could see the long table, and the cousins, and my uncle carving, and my grandmother's good china.

It was my mother's Thanksgiving. I had sat at that table thirty years.

Monique was waiting on the porch in a thin green dress, with her arms wrapped around herself and no coat.

She flinched when she saw me.

"You came."

"You asked."

"Keep your voice down. Please." She glanced back at the window. "I haven't got long."

"Then say it."

Her eyes were red. She twisted my ring with her thumb.

"She showed me messages," Monique said. "From you. To a girl in Denver. Dozens of them. She said you'd been seeing her for a year."

"I haven't spoken to a girl in Denver since the day I moved there."

"I know that now." Her voice cracked. "I knew it Tuesday when you looked at me in that living room. I knew it was fake. And I still said I had never seen you."

I waited.

"She paid me," Monique said. "Twenty thousand dollars, in cash. And the wedding. She said she'd pay for the wedding Mom has always wanted, and I could keep the ring."
