Chapter 8: Take My Name Off It

The cruiser turned onto Alder Street with its lights on and no siren.

Lark stepped out and put one hand on her belt and looked at the porch, and then at the window full of faces.

She did not look at me for even a second.

"Ms. Ellingwood," she said. "You called about an intruder."

"That's him." Natasha pointed. "He's in violation of the order. He came onto my property and he threatened my fiancée."

"Monique Marlow is my fiancée," I said.

"Hands," Lark said.

I kept them up.

"Officer," Natasha said. "Arrest him. You have the paper."

"I do have the paper."

Lark climbed the steps and stood between us.

Then the front door opened and my father walked out onto the porch.

He wore his good gray sweater with the napkin still tucked into the collar.

Nobody in the dining room moved. My mother stood behind him in the hall with her hands pressed to her chest.

"Harold," she said. "Harold, don't."

My father didn't turn around.

"Officer," he said. "I'm one of the witnesses on that order."

"Yes, sir."

"I want my name off it."

Natasha's head snapped toward him.

"Dad."

"I signed it three weeks ago because I was told there were threatening messages." My father's voice shook, and it carried to every chair at the table. "I never saw one. I put my name where my wife told me to put it. I'm sorry, Calvin."

He was looking straight at me.

It was the first time in two days he had looked me in the eye.

"I can't take the arrest tonight," Lark said. "A witness has retracted. I'll note it."

"You can't," Natasha said.

"Ms. Ellingwood, you phoned in an intruder, and what's on this porch is a man whose own father just took back his signature, with your family's own table watching." Lark's voice was flat. "I'm writing the call up as unfounded. And I'm reading the call back at the station tomorrow."

"My brother is dangerous."

"He's standing here with his hands up."

"Joan!" Natasha said sharply. "Tell her."
