Chapter 15: Said Aloud

My father was in his study with the lights off and a letter from the bank open on the desk.

He had the face of a man who had been up all night doing sums that came out the same every time.

"I didn't think you'd come," he said.

"You put the house on Reese's loan."

"She told me Delancey would pay for itself in a year."

"And you believed her."

"She cried," my father said. "She sat on the arm of this chair and cried and said you'd turned against her, and that she needed one thing to go right."

"She isn't crying now, Papa. She's at the yard with a lawyer, shouting at the county."

He looked up and saw my left hand.

"Where's your ring?"

"On Giles's chair."

"Hallie."

"I'm not here about that."

He took off his glasses and put them on the blotter.

He looked older than fifty-eight, and smaller, and I realized with a kind of tired surprise that I didn't hate him.

"The bank gives me until the end of the month," he said. "Then they come for the house, your mother's piano, everything."

"You sold us both to fix a hotel."

"I wanted you safe."

"You wanted a hotel."

"Both," he whispered.

That was the most honest thing he had ever said to me, and I let it stand in the room.

"I'll think about the house," I said.

I went out through the French doors into the garden.

The white tent had been taken down, and the grass where it stood had gone yellow in the shape of the floor.

I walked to the edge of the lawn, where the old greenhouse had been, and there was a car coming up the long drive.
