Chapter 19: Left Hand

Giles's POV

Hallie fell asleep at two in the morning with her hand flat on my chest.

I did not sleep.

At half past two my phone lit on the nightstand, and I read it with my thumb over the screen to keep the glow off her face.

It was from the head of my security team.

It said: Neighbors at the Bachelder place called the county at midnight. Shouting, glass. Truck is home. Her car is in the drive. Sheriff's deputy came, left after ten minutes. Nobody pressed anything.

I read it three times.

Then I lay there and looked at the ceiling.

I had sat in a car once and watched a door open.

I knew exactly what I would do if I lay there until morning, and what I would tell myself afterward.

I eased her hand off my chest and set it on the sheet.

She stirred and said something that was almost my name.

I put on my clothes in the dark and left a note on the kitchen counter, three lines, plain.

It said: Gone to see to something. Back by eight. I will tell you everything.

Then I took the stairs down, because the elevator was too slow, and the car out of the garage.

The Bachelder Garage sat at the end of a gravel road, three hours north, between a feed store and a field.

I got there a little after five, with the sky going grey over the rows of old cars.

A light burned in the office.

Her black sedan was parked crooked in the yard, with one door open.

I walked in without knocking.

The bay was a long room that smelled of oil and coffee and something sweeter, bourbon spilled on concrete.

Wayne stood at the workbench with his back to me, and a half-empty bottle at his elbow.
