Chapter 15: The Rite Word

Ambrose came in with a roll of paper under his arm and stopped at the sight of the Emperor.

Valdemar stood by the stove in his trousers, with a plain black leather belt buckled around his throat.

The old steward looked at the belt for a moment.

Then he looked at the ceiling, with great interest, and kept looking at it until Hinata had put on her tunic.

"The order, Majesty," he said, to the rafters.

Valdemar took the paper and read it standing.

Hinata read it over his arm.

The Regent would be crowned on Midwinter's Eve, at the last light of sunset, in the Throne Hall.

Every lord of the Empire was commanded to attend.

The man-eater of the Menagerie would be brought before the court by its tamer, as proof that the Emperor's killer was chained.

Hinata read the last line twice.

"He's inviting me to my own funeral," she said.

"He is inviting the beast to its own," said Valdemar. His voice was very even. "And you to watch."

"Ambrose, what else?"

The old man finally lowered his eyes.
