Chapter 18: Both
"Lie down," said Hinata.
Valdemar lay down on the heap of blankets with his hands folded on his chest.
He looked like a king on a tomb, except that he was trying very hard not to smile.
"Not like that. Like you're in the sun."
"I am in a bathhouse."
"Pretend."
He unfolded his hands, stretched out his long legs, and turned his face up toward the colored windows.
"Better," she said. "First, the lap."
She sat with her back against the wall, and drew his head down into her lap.
He settled there with a sigh.
Her fingers went into his hair, behind his ears, and she rubbed with her thumbs in small slow circles.
He closed his eyes.
"He does this."
"For about an hour."
"He is shameless."
"He's a professional."
His chest began to move with long slow breaths.
"Next," Hinata said. "He puts his chin on my knee, like this."
He turned his head, set his chin on her knee, and looked up at her.
The gold eyes were wide and solemn and slightly cross-eyed, and she bit down on a laugh and failed.
"That is the face?"
"That is the face. He's never once been ashamed of it."
"What else?"
She took his right hand and turned it over.
"Cheek," she said.
He laid his cheek into her palm, and rubbed it from side to side along the skin.
It was exactly right, and she had to look at the ceiling.
"I did that in the cellar," he said, a little shaken. "I did it without knowing."
"Yes."
"I think I have been doing it for months."
