Chapter 20: Last Night

The Hall of Heroes was very cold, and very large, and it smelled of old stone and candle wax.

Ambrose had unlocked the servants' door with his key and gone away down the stair without a word.

Hinata stood in the dark with her hand in Valdemar's and looked at the room she had arrived in.

Moonlight came through the high windows and lay in pale squares along the floor.

At the far end rose the dais.

The empty throne, and above it, ten feet tall, the portrait of a young man in black armor with a tired face.

On the lowest step a new silver bolt gleamed, with a chain coiled beside it.

"That's for him," said Hinata.

"That is for me," said Valdemar, quietly.

He did not look at the chain.

He looked at the middle of the floor, where a wide circle of white lines had been set into the marble.

It was dim, but not dark.

A faint blue light still crawled in the grooves.

"That is where you stood," he said.

"Yes."

"My father never used it. The Duke woke it." He turned her hand over and looked at the two prints. "The archmage says the circle will open both ways, until the light leaves that west window tomorrow."

"I told you at dusk."

"You did. I have not asked what you answered." His voice was steady. "I will not ask. I will say instead that if you wanted to go home, I would walk you to the center of that circle myself, and I would not ask you to stay."
