Chapter 23: Whole

He looked at his hand for a long time.

The pale morning lay across his knuckles, and the old scar on his forearm.

The fingers he had been told every dawn for eight months would turn to paws.

Then he laughed.

It broke in the middle, and he put his face into her shoulder, and she felt him shaking.

"It is the sun," Valdemar said into her skin. "It is only the sun."

"You're okay."

"I am a man in the daylight." He lifted his head, and his eyes were wet and gold and astonished. "Hinata, I have not seen my own hands in the sun since the Hunt."

She kissed both of them.

At noon, the Throne Hall was full again.

The sun poured in through the tall windows, white and clean.

It lay in long bars across the marble and the people standing on it.

Lords and ladies, soldiers and servants, the grey priests in a quiet row.

The whole kitchen staff crammed against the back wall, craning to see.

The crown lay on its cushion at the top of the steps.

Valdemar did not take it himself.

"Ambrose," he said.
