Chapter 24: A Plain Black Band
The first thing Hinata saw when she woke was a black tail across her ankles.
Sun poured through the tall window of the Emperor's bedroom.
The panther lay sprawled across the foot of the huge bed, with his belly turned up to the sun.
One golden eye opened.
"You did it on purpose," Hinata said.
The tail thumped the quilt.
"You woke up and thought, I'd like to be a cat."
Thump.
"You are the Emperor."
Thump, thump, which meant yes, so what.
She crawled down the bed on her elbows and dug her fingers into the thick fur behind his ears.
He melted.
A rumble started up in his chest, loud enough to shake the pillows.
He rolled onto his back and stuck all four paws in the air with perfect dignity.
She laughed until her sides hurt.
"All right. All right. Enjoy your sun."
She dressed, and ate breakfast on the balcony with her feet on the rail.
He followed her out and lay in a warm patch on the stones, flicking an ear whenever a servant walked by.
The servants had stopped being surprised on the second morning.
At noon Ambrose came out with a tray.
Under the cover, beside a plate of chicken, lay a worn black leather strap with a small brass buckle.
"I thought His Majesty might want it," the old man said, with great calm. "It was in the ruins of the tower. The soldiers did not see fit to take it."
Hinata held it a moment.
Then she put it on the arm of her chair.
The panther looked at it, and at her, and yawned very widely, showing every tooth.
By afternoon the sun lay in a long gold bar across the bed.
He walked in from the balcony as a cat and stood in the bar of light.
