Chapter 10: Dawn Vault

They carried him out of the chapel on eight shoulders, with the glass lid shut and the white roses thrown on the floor.

I walked beside the coffin with my hand flat on the lid.

Nobody stopped me.

Two hundred vampires in black stood in the courtyard of Brabazon Keep in the cold gray light, and the great round door of the sun vault stood open before them.

It was a chamber of pale stone set into the hillside.

Inside, a single flat slab waited on an altar, and above it the roof was built of one huge dull crystal.

At dawn, it would fill with light.

When the door closed, it would stay filled forever.

"Your Grace," the tall minister said, as the bearers lifted the coffin onto the slab. His voice was high and shaking, but he said it loud enough for the crowd. "The man in the chapel named you. I heard him."

"A human, caught with a knife, will say anything," Rooke said, over his shoulder.

"He said you gave him the key."

"He is a liar, and a thief, and he will be dealt with."

A murmur ran around the courtyard.

I saw doubt on a dozen faces, and I saw them look at the four dukes beside Rooke, and I saw nobody step forward.

Hester stood at my elbow with her keys in her fist.

"They are frightened," she said quietly. "They will not move until someone moves first."

"Then I'll move."

[Now. Your blood. His lips. Say his name.]

The words were so clear that I thought everyone must see them.

I stepped past the bearers and put both hands on the coffin lid.
