Chapter 12: Teeth

My teeth went through his skin.

It was easier than I thought.

He gasped, hoarse and shocked, and his whole body went rigid against mine.

Blood filled my mouth.

It was cold at first, then not cold at all.

It tasted of iron and smoke and something old and sweet.

I swallowed.

A strange bright heat spread down my throat and into my chest.

"Ingrid," he said, shaking. "Stop."

I bit harder.

He made a sound I had never heard from him, low and broken, and his hands came up and fisted in my shirt.

"That is mine," I said against his neck, wet and furious. "You don't get to spend it without asking me."

"It's not yours to"

"It's my Ledger. It's my blood. It's my name on the line."

I lifted my head. My mouth was red.

"You don't decide how I'm spent. And you don't get to decide how you are."

His eyes were black.

I had never seen them like that, no grey in them at all, the pupils swallowing everything.

For a moment I thought I had gone too far.

Then he grabbed me by the hips and lifted me off the floor.

"You," he said, in a voice like gravel, "are the most infuriating"

He slammed me onto the desk.

Papers flew.

An inkwell hit the wall and cracked.

I landed on my back with my legs wrapped around his waist.

His mouth came down on mine in a kiss that tasted of his own blood.
