Chapter 8: Fourth Company
The live-fire range sat at the bottom of the hill behind the academy.
Fourth Company shot on Thursdays, with everyone else watching from the berm.
Second Company's top cadet stood at the next lane with a rifle that cost more than my grandfather's truck.
He was tall, blond and bored, and he had spent ten minutes telling the whole berm what he planned to do to the Null.
"Try not to shoot yourself, Solheim," he said, loud enough for the stands.
"I'll try."
"If you hit the paper, I'll buy you dinner."
"If I hit the paper, you'll buy Poppy dinner."
Poppy, three lanes down, gave a squeak of delight.
"Fire at will," called the range instructor.
I settled the stock into my shoulder.
The gold window opened right beside the target.
GRIP 11. NERVE 9. IRON VEINS ACTIVE.
A thin line of light stretched from my sights to the center of the paper.
I breathed out.
