Chapter 15: Donuts and Warnings

Kyle was waiting at my desk at four the next afternoon with a box of donuts and a very worried face.

"Before you say anything," he said, "I knew."

"Knew what?"

"About Morvath. Since the first week. You came back from his building with your sweater on inside out."

"My sweater was not inside out."

"One sleeve was."

I sat down.

"Why didn't you say something?"

"Because you were happy," said Kyle. "You hummed. You've never hummed at that desk once."

I looked at the donuts, and then at him.

"I'm in a lot of trouble, Kyle."

"I know. That's the second thing."

He pulled a manila envelope from under the donut box.

"Abercrombie was in the records room until midnight. I waited in the garage and went in after he left."

"You broke into the records room?"

"I used my badge, which opens it, because I'm a caseworker."

"What did you find?"

He slid out two sheets of paper and laid them on my blotter.

They were photocopies, with a county stamp at the top.

The first was a letter dated in 2011, handwritten, in neat blue ink.

*To the Night Compliance Office. I am the woman Mr. Morvath stopped from being beaten on June 4.*

*Please do not charge him. I will testify. Here is my phone number.*

The second was the same letter, sent again, six weeks later.

Across the top of both, in red pen, someone had stamped NOT FORWARDED and initialed it.

*A.P.*

I read the initials twice.
