Chapter 19: Mr. Kemper

The first Saturday, Allison was waiting on the front steps of the motel at eight in the morning.

She wore jeans, a gray sweater, and the plain gold band on her left hand.

It sat on her ring finger, where anyone could see it.

"You took the bus," I said.

"Two buses. I'm early."

"Where are we going?"

"The diner on Fifth," she said. "The one with the big front window."

"We've never gone there."

"I know. I used to drive by it so nobody from work would see us."

We went in together, and she picked the booth in the window.

A waitress poured two coffees.

Allison reached across the table and took my hand, the one with the bandage.

"People are looking," I said.

"Good."

"Are you scared?"

"I'm terrified."

"Then why do you look happy?"

"Because I'm scared and I'm still holding your hand," she said.

I had to look out the window for a minute.

We ate pancakes in the front window of the diner.

A man at the counter recognized her from a business magazine, and stared.

She raised her coffee cup at him.

"Good morning," she said.

At noon she took me to the park where she had once told me she was "walking a client", and she bought two hot dogs from the cart.

At two she took me to the hotel across from the ballroom, the one she had always parked behind, and she walked me through the front lobby with her hand in mine.

The doorman greeted us by her title.

"This is my husband," she said to him.

"Congratulations, ma'am," the doorman said.

"It's been six years," Allison said. "I'm late."

I did not laugh, but my chest did something close to it.

By four, she had run out of places she had hidden me.
