Chapter 13: On the Record
Clara's POV
The department head showed me the column on her phone in the supply room, with the door shut.
"I wanted you to see it from me," she said, "before you saw it from the nurses."
The headline was The Cellist and the Cold Doctor.
It ran under a photograph of Philippa on the Long Center stage, her wrapped wrist raised toward the camera.
I read it standing between the saline and the gauze.
A source close to the family said Dr. Clara Tillman, a trauma resident, had refused to treat an injured musician.
The same source said Dr. Tillman had left her husband alone in his grief weeks after a family loss.
His public breakdown at the charity concert, it said, was the cry of a man abandoned by a wife who cared more about her career.
There was no mention of the check.
There was no mention of the fifth call.
"The hospital's press office has had eleven emails," the department head said. "Two are from reporters."
"It's not true."
"I know it's not true. I trained you." She took the phone back. "She has a breakfast at ten. Press, a few patrons, the new promoter. It's at a hotel on Congress."
"I know where."
"Clara." She put a hand flat on the shelf beside my head. "You're allowed to let a lawyer do this."
"A lawyer will take a month."
"Then go in your coat," she said. "Not your scrubs. You're a doctor on her day off, not a prop."
I went in my coat.
The ballroom had round tables, a podium and a screen with Philippa's face on it six feet tall.
She stood at the front in cream wool, with a cup of coffee in her good hand, laughing at something a man in a grey suit had said.
