Chapter 7: Clara's POV

Clara's POV

I went to the house at four in the afternoon, when Hayes would be at the firm.

I still had my key.

I had two empty duffel bags, a day off until midnight, and a list on my phone of the things that were mine.

The scrubs. My mother's quilt. A framed photograph of the shop in Marietta with my father in the window.

That was all of it, really.

The front door opened onto the smell of onions.

I stood in the hall and listened.

Somebody was in my kitchen, and a spoon was scraping against a pot.

I walked down the hall and stopped in the doorway.

Philippa Crane stood at my stove with the sleeves of a grey sweater pushed up, one wrist wrapped in a bandage.

She was stirring a pot of soup with her good hand.

My apron was tied around her waist, the blue one with the star I had stitched on the pocket.

"Oh," she said, and turned around. "Clara. Hayes didn't say you'd be here."

"He doesn't know I'm here."

"I'd offer you some." She lifted the spoon. "But I'm not sure it's your style."

"What are you doing in my house?"

"Hayes gave me the code when my hotel had a leak. He's been very kind." She tilted her head. "He hasn't eaten properly in two days. Someone has to look after him."

I put my duffel bag down on the floor.

My hands were steady, and that surprised me.

"The soup is the same one you said was getting cold," I said. "On the phone, last week."

"Is it?" She smiled a little. "I make it often."
