Chapter 6: The Pitch

Vott's studio was a converted barn at the far end of Birch Street, painted black inside, with three cameras on rails and a neon sign that said TRUST US.

Clark stood in the doorway for a long second before he went in.

"Hold my hand," I murmured. "If anyone's watching, it's the one thing a girlfriend does."

He took it.

His palm was warm and dry, and I forgot what I was nervous about.

Dax met us at a glass table with a bottle of sparkling water he didn't offer.

Rhett was nowhere.

"Mr. Ellery," Dax said. "Ten million dollars."

"For what?"

"For a stake in Vott. I'll make you the most trusted man in America. Thirty-one million followers who'll buy whatever your watches are called." Dax tapped the table. "Your girlfriend gets her handle managed properly, and no more messy clips."

"Messy clips you made."

"Allegedly."

I felt my temper rise, and Clark squeezed my hand once, very lightly.

"I'll think about it," Clark said.

"Think fast." Dax's smile had a lot of teeth. "Homecoming is in three weeks. I'd hate for you to miss the cameras."

He stood and left through a side door, and Clark didn't move.

He was staring at the back wall of the studio, a plain black wall with a gray steel door in it.

He wasn't looking at the door.

He was looking behind it.

"What?" I whispered.

"There's a room back there with a lock on it," he said softly. "About four hundred drives in racks. Each one has a name on a label. First names, last names, student ID numbers."
