Chapter 9: Brooke's Bag

By noon the next day, the commons atrium held more than a thousand people.

Students sat on the stairs and the railings, and a boy had climbed the fake palm tree.

The black curtain had a real stage in front of it now, with a stool for Brooke and a podium for Dax.

Rhett stood beside them in a clean Vott hoodie, with a bruise from the cupcake still faintly visible on his forehead.

Clark and I came in through the front doors, and the crowd parted.

"Don't answer her," I said quietly. "Don't give them anything."

"I won't."

"Promise."

"Cecelia." He looked at me with perfect calm. "I'm going to tell the truth."

My heart stopped.

"All of it?"

"The part that's mine."

Brooke sat on the stool in a pale pink sweater, with her hands folded and her eyes wet.

She told it exactly as she had in the video, better, with pauses.

"He knew things," she said, "about my bathroom. About my bedroom. I felt like a bird in a glass cage."

People murmured and shook their heads.

"And Clark," Dax said, with sorrow in his voice. "You're welcome to answer."

Clark walked up the three steps and took the microphone.

He didn't look at Brooke.

He looked at the room, at all of them.

"I was born with a condition," he said. "I can see through solid things. Walls. Bags. Doors."

The room gasped.

A girl laughed in disbelief, and then stopped when no one else did.

Somewhere behind her, a boy quietly moved his backpack under his chair.

"Brooke says I watched her for six months," Clark said. "I met her once in my life, in person, in March, in a coat check in Chicago. She said she was twenty-one. She was eighteen."
