Chapter 18: Sunday Again
The long table on Albemarle Street was set for thirty, and the chair at the head had no one in it.
An aunt had laid a white napkin on the arm of it and stood a candle by the plate.
She looked at me when I came in with Katia, and she did not smile or frown.
"The Don is upstairs," she said. "He told us to start without him."
"Who's cooking?" Katia asked.
The kitchen door swung open behind the aunt, and the smell of garlic and tomato rolled out.
Nero stood at the stove in his shirt sleeves with a dish towel tucked into his belt.
He had flour on his cheek.
He was stirring a pot the size of a washtub, and four aunts and a grandmother stood around him with their arms crossed.
"Not enough basil," the grandmother said.
"There's plenty of basil, Nonna."
"There's a lot of basil for a man who lost his house."
Katia snorted so loudly that one of the aunts turned around.
